Yusuke Urameshi's Death in a Traffic Accident
Yusuke Urameshi, a delinquent middle-schooler, was killed by a car while trying to save a child who had run into the street. The Spirit World had not anticipated his death, leaving his soul in limbo and prompting Koenma to consider special measures.
Yusuke's Revival and Appointment as Spirit Detective
After passing trials set by Koenma, Yusuke was revived and appointed Spirit Detective. He was tasked with investigating and resolving crimes involving demons, working under Koenma's direction.
Arrest of Kurama and Hiei, Recovery of Spirit World Treasures
Demons Kurama and Hiei stole three forbidden artifacts from the Spirit World. Yusuke was ordered by Koenma to retrieve them, recovering the Mirror of Darkness from Kurama and the Dark Flame legacy from Hiei, laying the groundwork for their later alliance.
Genkai's Disciple Selection Tournament and Mastery of Spirit Gun
Genkai, master of the Spirit Wave technique, sensed her approaching end and held a tournament to select her successor. Yusuke and Kuwabara were among the competitors; Yusuke won and was taught the fundamentals of spirit energy, including the Spirit Gun.
Defeat of the Four Saint Beasts and Formation of Team Urameshi
To stop the Four Saint Beasts' invasion of the human world, Kurama and Hiei joined Yusuke and Kuwabara under a deal to reduce their sentences. The four fought together for the first time as a team, each defeating one of the beasts in the Labyrinth Castle.
Forced Invitation to the Dark Tournament
Team Urameshi was forcibly invited as guests to the Dark Tournament — an underground fighting competition staged by a businessman under demonic influence. Refusal meant death, so Yusuke's team entered with Koenma as their owner.
Fierce Battles and Growth of Team Members at the Dark Tournament
Team Urameshi defeated Rokuyukai, Dr. Ichigaki's team, the Masho-tsukai team, and Team Uraotogi in succession. Each member developed their abilities through these clashes, with Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara each demonstrating their full individual potential.
Yusuke vs. Younger Toguro — Final Battle
Team Urameshi faced Toguro's team in the final. Younger Toguro released 100% of his power and overwhelmed Yusuke, but the recoil of exceeding his limit destroyed his body. He thanked Yusuke for the first true battle of his life before dying; Team Urameshi won.
Anomalies in Mushiyori City and the Appearance of Shinobu Sensui
Humans with special abilities began appearing near Mushiyori City, foreshadowing the opening of a boundary tunnel between the human and demon worlds. It was revealed that former Spirit Detective Shinobu Sensui planned to fully open the tunnel to annihilate humanity.
Yusuke's Second Death in Battle with Sensui
Yusuke was killed in direct combat with Sensui, who outclassed him entirely. His death triggered the revelation that he was the 44th-generation descendant of Raizen, one of the three demon world rulers, awakening his dormant demonic heritage through the phenomenon of Mazoku Taikasei.
Yusuke, Awakened as a Demon, Defeats Sensui
Revived through demonic awakening, Yusuke pursued Sensui to the Demon World and incapacitated him with an amplified Spirit Gun. Sensui revealed his true motive — he had wanted to die in the Demon World — and died. The Spirit World's special forces then sealed the boundary rift.
Yusuke Travels to the Demon World and Meets Raizen
After defeating Sensui, Yusuke traveled to the Demon World to meet his ancestor Raizen. Raizen had been weakening for centuries due to a vow never to eat humans again, and died after passing part of his power to Yusuke.
The Demon World Unification Tournament
After Raizen's death, Yomi — one of the three demon world powers — proposed a unification tournament to settle the struggle for dominance without all-out war. Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei, and many others competed in a massive tournament spanning over 60 hours.
Enki's Victory and the New Order of the Three Realms
Yusuke lost to Yomi, and Enki ultimately won the tournament, becoming the new ruler of the Demon World. Enki chose a policy of non-interference with the human world, and the barriers between the three realms were lifted, allowing free movement between them.
Epilogue: Return of the Characters and Their New Lives
After the tournament, Yusuke returned to the human world and visited Genkai's grave with his companions. Genkai had died before the tournament. Kuwabara went on to university, Kurama helped with his stepfather's company, Hiei patrolled the Demon World, and Yusuke stood with Keiko by the sea as the story ended.
