Kite, a disciple of Gon's father Gin, rescued the young Gon from a Foxbear attack in the forest of Whale Island. This encounter revealed to Gon that his father was alive and working as a Hunter, planting the seeds of his resolve to take the Hunter Exam.

The Phantom Troupe's Massacre of the Kurta Clan
The Phantom Troupe (or a related force) raided the hidden village of the Kurta Clan, killing all 128 members and removing their distinctive scarlet eyes. Kurapika, who was away at the time, survived and vowed revenge.

The 287th Hunter Exam: Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio Pass
Twelve-year-old Gon enters the Hunter Exam for the first time alongside 287 other candidates. After surviving multiple brutal phases, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio pass. Killua is disqualified for killing an examiner and returned to the Zoldyck estate.
