Kikyo Guards the Shikon Jewel and Meets Inuyasha
Kikyo, a shrine priestess of the Sengoku era, served as guardian of the sacred Shikon Jewel, protecting her village from demons. She encountered the half-demon Inuyasha, who coveted the Jewel, and the two developed a complex and increasingly close bond. Kikyo hoped Inuyasha would use the Jewel to become fully human.
Naraku's Treachery — Kikyo and Inuyasha Are Torn Apart
Naraku, a half-human entity, disguised himself as both Kikyo and Inuyasha to drive the two apart. Believing herself betrayed, a gravely wounded Kikyo used the last of her strength to fire a sealing arrow that pinned Inuyasha to the sacred tree. She died shortly after, leaving instructions for the Shikon Jewel to be burned with her body.
Kagome Higurashi Falls Through the Bone-Eater's Well Into the Sengoku Period
Kagome Higurashi, a third-year middle school student in modern Tokyo (1996), was pulled into the Bone-Eater's Well at her family shrine and transported five hundred years into the past. Attacked by a centipede demon seeking the Shikon Jewel within her body, she revealed herself as the reincarnation of the priestess Kikyo, and the story began in earnest.
The Shikon Jewel Shatters — The Quest for the Sacred Shards Begins
When Kagome's arrow struck the Sacred Jewel embedded in a crow demon, the Jewel shattered into countless fragments that scattered across Japan. Inuyasha and Kagome were compelled to travel together to recover every shard before Naraku and other demons could obtain them.
Meeting Miroku, Sango, and Shippo — The Group Forms
In the course of their journey, Inuyasha and Kagome were joined by Miroku — a monk bearing the cursed Wind Tunnel inflicted by Naraku — the demon-slayer Sango, whose family was destroyed by Naraku, and the young fox demon Shippo. Each companion carried a personal reason for opposing Naraku.
Kikyo Resurrected — The Dead Priestess Returns to Wander the World
A servant of Naraku summoned Kikyo's soul back from the underworld and placed it within her resurrected body, bringing her back as an undead existence — neither fully alive nor fully dead. Harboring complex feelings for Inuyasha, the resurrected Kikyo swore her own revenge against Naraku and set out on a solitary path.
Naraku Takes Physical Form and Fashions a New Body — Evolving Into a Monstrous Entity
Naraku — a fusion of the human Onigumo and numerous demons — had always been an incomplete being. By absorbing shards of the Shikon Jewel, he repeatedly upgraded and reconstructed his body. He began separating his heart from his main form as a survival strategy, making him increasingly difficult for Inuyasha's group to defeat.
Kikyo Struck by Naraku's Poisoned Arrow — Final Death
Kikyo, pursuing her revenge against Naraku even after her resurrection, was mortally wounded by one of Naraku's poisoned arrows. She died in Inuyasha's arms, and in her final moments her soul ascended to the heavens. Her death deepened the grief of the group and steeled their resolve to destroy Naraku.
The Shikon Jewel Is Made Whole — Naraku Claims It
The scattered fragments of the Shikon Jewel were assembled by Naraku, completing the Jewel at last. Absorbing its full power, Naraku continued to expand as a vast demonic amalgam. Inuyasha and his companions steeled themselves for a final confrontation against the empowered Naraku.
Final Battle with Naraku — Inuyasha's Group Prevails
Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango, Shippo, and Sesshomaru united to fight Naraku, who had absorbed the completed Shikon Jewel. With Miroku's Wind Tunnel pushed to its limit and Sango sacrificing herself to protect him, Sesshomaru's Bakusaiga and Inuyasha's Tessaiga shattered Naraku's body. After Naraku's defeat, Kagome was drawn into the Shikon Jewel through the Bone-Eater's Well.
Kagome Speaks the One True Wish to the Shikon Jewel
Drawn inside the Shikon Jewel, Kagome came to understand the twisted will that had driven humans and demons to fight over it for centuries. She spoke the one true wish — that the Jewel cease to exist — and the Shikon Jewel vanished completely, bringing Naraku to a final and absolute end.
Kagome Returns to the Modern Era but the Well Seals Shut
After the Shikon Jewel's disappearance, Kagome returned to the modern era (1996), but the Bone-Eater's Well sealed itself, cutting off her access to the Sengoku period. She spent three years continuing high school in the modern world, separated from Inuyasha.
The Well Opens Again — Kagome Returns to the Sengoku Period
Shortly after finishing high school, the Bone-Eater's Well reactivated for the first time in three years. Kagome traveled back to the Sengoku period and reunited with Inuyasha. She chose not to return to the modern era, instead remaining in the Sengoku period to live with him.
