Tokyo — Ghouls and Humans Living Side by Side
In contemporary Tokyo, flesh-eating creatures called ghouls secretly inhabit human society. The Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) has been established to track and eliminate them. Most ghouls conceal their true nature, maintaining an uneasy and hidden coexistence with humans.

The Rize Incident — Kaneki Becomes a Half-Ghoul
College student Ken Kaneki is attacked and gravely wounded by Rize Kamishiro, a ghoul he befriended. When a construction accident kills Rize, her organs are transplanted into Kaneki, transforming him into a half-ghoul with traits of both species.

Anteiku — Kaneki Sheltered by a Ghoul-Run Café
Kaneki is taken in by Yoshimura, owner of Anteiku, a café secretly run by ghouls in the 20th ward. Anteiku functions as a haven of peaceful coexistence; Kaneki works there as a waiter while learning to live as a half-ghoul.

Aogiri Tree Rises — The 11th Ward Conflict
The radical ghoul organization Aogiri Tree seizes control of the 11th ward, triggering a large-scale clash with the CCG. Aogiri also abducts individuals connected to Anteiku, drawing Kaneki and others into the conflict.
Vol.5〜6巻 — Original series, volumes 5–6. Aogiri Tree becomes the primary antagonist organization throughout the story.
Kaneki's Torture in Aogiri Captivity — The Emergence of 'White Kaneki'
Captured by Aogiri, Kaneki is subjected to prolonged torture by the organization's enforcer Jason (Yamori). At the psychological breaking point, Kaneki undergoes a fundamental transformation — his hair turns white and he escapes on his own terms, vowing to protect those close to him through strength.
Vol.6〜7巻 — Original series, volumes 6–7. The 'White Kaneki' transformation is widely regarded as the story's first major turning point.
Kaneki's Group Formed — Pursuing Dr. Kanou
White Kaneki assembles his own group and begins hunting down Dr. Kanou, who has been continuing human-to-ghoul conversion experiments. During this period, Kaneki's group finds itself watched by both the CCG and Aogiri Tree.

Operation Owl Suppression — Anteiku Destroyed
The CCG launches a major operation in the 20th ward under the name 'Operation Owl Suppression,' targeting the ghoul known as the Owl. Anteiku — the haven that had sheltered Kaneki — is destroyed and Yoshimura is captured, ending the era of peaceful coexistence that Anteiku represented.
Vol.13〜14巻 — Original series, volumes 13–14. The identity of the One-Eyed Owl (Eto) begins to surface in this arc.
Kaneki vs. Arima — Defeat and Memory Loss
During the Owl Suppression Operation, Kaneki confronts CCG's most powerful investigator, Arima Kishou, and is defeated. The battle leaves Kaneki with catastrophic brain damage and total memory loss, bringing the original series to a close and leading directly into Tokyo Ghoul:re.

Sasaki Haise — Reborn as a CCG Investigator
Having lost all memory of his former life, Kaneki is reborn as CCG investigator Sasaki Haise, serving as mentor to the Quinx Squad. Haise is unaware of his past as Kaneki and regards Arima as a trusted superior. The Kaneki personality persists within him but is suppressed out of fear.

The Quinx Squad in Action — CCG's New Generation
The Quinx Squad led by Haise consists of human investigators who have undergone surgical transplantation of ghoul kagune. Through successive missions they gain experience, while each member's ghoul-side abilities gradually awaken. Haise values his bond with his subordinates but is increasingly troubled by the presence of Kaneki lurking within him.

Operation Auction and the Rose Extermination
The CCG simultaneously conducts Operation Auction to crush an underground ghoul auction network and an operation to eliminate the Rosewald ghoul clan (Rose). These battles push Haise to his limits, and the Kaneki personality within him begins to surface.

The True Identity of the One-Eyed Owl Revealed — Eto's Confession
Eto Yoshimura publicly announces at a press conference that she is a ghoul, using the act as a political statement. Her true purpose — engineering the birth of the One-Eyed King by working behind the scenes of Aogiri alongside Arima — begins to be revealed.

Cochlea Prison Break and the Rushima Operation — Kaneki Awakens
Aogiri remnants storm the CCG's special detention facility Cochlea, triggering a mass breakout. Simultaneously, the CCG launches a landing operation on Rushima, Aogiri's main base. In the chaos, Haise finally recovers his memories and identity as Ken Kaneki.
Vol.:re 7〜9巻 — Tokyo Ghoul:re, volumes 7–9. The story's major turning point: the return from Sasaki Haise to Ken Kaneki.
The Truth of Arima Kishou — The One-Eyed King's Succession
In their second encounter, Arima reveals that he is a half-human born of ghoul and human parents, and that he had secretly led Aogiri as the original One-Eyed King alongside Eto. He chooses to die at Kaneki's hands, entrusting the title and mission of the One-Eyed King to Kaneki.
Vol.:re 9〜10巻 — Tokyo Ghoul:re, volumes 9–10. The revelation of Arima's true identity is the story's central mystery payoff.
Black Goat Founded — Seeking Human-Ghoul Coexistence
Now the One-Eyed King, Kaneki gathers Aogiri survivors, escaped ghouls, and human allies to form the organization Black Goat (Kuroiwa). They resist the CCG while pursuing a world where humans and ghouls can coexist. During this period, the relationship between Kaneki and Touka Kirishima deepens.

The Dragon Transformation — Kaneki Becomes the Monstrous 'Dragon'
Through Furuta's scheme, Kaneki consumes a mass of Oggai units to protect his allies and transforms into 'Dragon,' an uncontrollable colossal monster. Dragon devastates Tokyo and releases a toxin that begins turning the population into ghouls. Kaneki's consciousness becomes trapped within the creature.

CCG and Black Goat Unite — Entering the Dragon
Faced with Dragon as a shared existential threat, the rival CCG and Black Goat join forces. Their combined teams enter Dragon's body to rescue Kaneki's consciousness from within and destroy the toxin's source. Furuta is ultimately defeated in direct combat with Kaneki.

Dragon Destroyed — Kaneki Returns
The operation inside Dragon succeeds, and Kaneki's consciousness is freed. The Dragon threat is neutralized; Tokyo has suffered catastrophic damage but the immediate crisis passes. Kaneki regains consciousness and returns to Touka and his allies.

TSC Founded — Toward Coexistence of Humans and Ghouls
The CCG is disbanded and replaced by the Tokyo Special Sweepers (TSC), a new organization dedicated to human-ghoul coexistence. Ken Kaneki and Touka marry and have a daughter, Ichika. The story ends with the ideal of coexistence, which drove the entire narrative, beginning to take tangible form.
