Appearance of the Meireki Great Kaiju and Birth of the Grudge Entity
A massive creature known as the Meireki Great Kaiju appeared in the Edo period, causing numerous casualties. The accumulated grudges of those who perished are said to have coalesced in a soldier's heart, giving rise to a will-entity called 'Mitsuketa' bearing hatred toward kaiju.
Kafka and Mina's Promise
In a Japan where kaiju attacks have become commonplace, a young Kafka makes a promise to his childhood friend Mina to 'wipe out all kaiju together.' This pledge becomes the foundation of Kafka's aspiration to join the Defense Force. Kafka was around sixth grade and Mina around first grade at the time.
Repeated Failures at Defense Force Exams and Career in Cleanup Work
As an adult, Kafka repeatedly fails the Defense Force entrance exams and gives up on his dream. He takes a job at Monster Sweeper, a company specializing in disposing of kaiju carcasses. In the meantime, Mina has risen to become captain of the Defense Force's Third Division.
Meeting Ichikawa Reno and Reigniting the Dream
After learning that his new 18-year-old coworker Ichikawa Reno aspires to join the Defense Force, Kafka resolves to try again at age 32. A reunion with Mina at the worksite also contributes to his decision.
Parasitism by Mitsuketa and Kafka's Transformation into Kaiju No. 8
A mysterious tiny creature appears before Kafka in a hospital room, utters 'Mitsuketa,' and enters his body through his mouth. Kafka gains the ability to transform into Kaiju No. 8 while retaining full human consciousness.
Defense Force Selection Exam and First Appearance of Kaiju No. 9
Kafka and Reno participate in the final stage of the Defense Force selection exam. During the exam, a mysterious intelligent humanoid kaiju revives a supposedly defeated specimen and attacks examinees. This creature is later identified as Kaiju No. 9.
Shinomiya Kikoru's Injury and Kafka's First Public Transformation
Kaiju No. 9 severely injures top candidate Shinomiya Kikoru during the final selection exam. Kafka transforms into Kaiju No. 8 to rescue Kikoru and complete the exam, though this marks the beginning of his being witnessed as an unidentified kaiju.
Official Enlistment and Assignment to the Third Division
Kafka and Reno are officially recruited as Defense Force members following Vice-Captain Hoshina's recommendation. Both are assigned to the Third Division under Captain Ashiro Mina. Kafka applies his cleanup-work knowledge of kaiju biology to his duties.
First Combat Mission in Sagamihara
Kafka participates in his first combat mission as a member of the Third Division in Sagamihara, Kanagawa. Unlike drill against lesser mass-produced creatures, the mission involves confronting identified medium-to-large kaiju, testing his mettle as a Defense Force member.
Kafka's Identity Exposed and Weaponization Averted
Kafka's transformation into Kaiju No. 8 during an emergency mission exposes his identity to Defense Force leadership. While disciplinary action is debated, Commander Shinomiya Isao recognizes his ability to maintain human consciousness during transformation and places disciplinary measures on hold, deciding to utilize him as a weapon against kaiju.
Placed under Narumi Genshin's Supervision and Provisional Assignment to First Division
By the commander's order, Kafka is placed under the supervision of First Division Captain Narumi Genshin, with Kikoru, until the Tachikawa base recovers its function. Narumi takes on the role of directly assessing Kafka's combat ability and self-control.
Large-Scale Attack on Tachikawa Base by Kaiju No. 9
Kaiju No. 9 leads a swarm of pterosaur-type kaiju in a large-scale assault on Tachikawa base. The Defense Force suffers catastrophic damage, forcing Commander Shinomiya Isao himself into direct combat. Kaiju No. 9's objective is to seize the Identified Kaiju Weapon No. 2 equipped by Isao.
Death of Shinomiya Isao and Kaiju No. 9's Seizure of Kaiju No. 2
After an intense battle against Kaiju No. 9, Shinomiya Isao reaches his limits and has the power of Kaiju No. 2 stripped from him, losing his life. He fights until the end with his thoughts of his daughter Kikoru in his heart, and his death becomes a major blow to the Defense Force.
Ichikawa Reno Becomes First-Ever Compatible User of Identified Kaiju Weapon No. 6
Reno becomes the first person in history to achieve compatibility with Identified Kaiju Weapon No. 6, regarded as the most powerful and dangerous of all such weapons. He begins dedicated training to control the power of a creature that previously caused catastrophic mass disasters.
Shinomiya Kikoru Inherits the Heirloom Identified Kaiju Weapon No. 4
On Narumi Genshin's instruction, Kikoru officially inherits the Identified Kaiju Weapon No. 4, a heirloom of the Shinomiya family. Carrying her late father Isao's will and family pride, she grows significantly as a fighting force.
Final Battle against Kaiju No. 9 Augmented by Kaiju No. 2
The decisive battle begins between the Defense Force and Kaiju No. 9, vastly empowered by incorporating Kaiju No. 2. Core forces including Kafka, Mina, and Kikoru coordinate a full-scale combined assault, with Kafka taking the front lines as Kaiju No. 8.
Defeat of Kaiju No. 9 and Manifestation of the Meireki Great Kaiju
The Defense Force's combined offensive defeats Kaiju No. 9, but the 'Meireki Great Kaiju' that lay dormant within it awakens and emerges as a new threat. Kafka, Reno, Kikoru, and Mina coordinate to reach and destroy its core.
Kafka's Return to Human Form and Reinstatement to the Third Division
Approximately four months after the final battle, Kafka awakens in a Defense Force medical facility in full human form. This results from Mitsuketa entrusting its own heart to Kafka and yielding the future to him. Only the story that 'Kaiju No. 8 saved the people' is passed on publicly, and Kafka steps into a new everyday life alongside his comrades.
