Shogunate Issues the Elixir Retrieval Mission
The Edo shogunate devised a plan to send condemned criminals to retrieve an immortality elixir from a remote island called Shinsenkyō, said to be a paradise. Dangerous convicts were gathered from across Japan, and only ten survivors of a battle royale among forty-one candidates earned the right to land on the island.
Gabimaru's Arrest and Failed Executions
Gabimaru, the strongest assassin of the Iwagakure clan, attempted to leave the clan after marrying the clan leader's daughter Yui, only to be betrayed and handed over to the magistrate's office. Multiple executions were attempted but failed due to his extraordinary physical conditioning.
Sagiri Offers Gabimaru the Mission
Sagiri, a young executioner and daughter of the Yamada Asaemon clan, was assigned as Gabimaru's handler and presented the shogunate's offer: bring back an immortality elixir from Shinsenkyō in exchange for a full pardon. Gabimaru accepted solely to reunite with his wife Yui.
Landing on Shinsenkyō
Ten selected convicts, each accompanied by a Yamada Asaemon executioner, set sail and landed on Shinsenkyō. The island appeared beautiful with colorful flowers and butterflies, but unsettling artificial details — including butterflies with human-like faces and eerie stone statues — hinted at something deeply wrong.
Discovery of Previous Expeditions' Fates
On the island, the group discovered mutated remains and plant-human hybrid creatures, likely the fate of previous expeditions sent by the shogunate. The true dangerous nature of Shinsenkyō began to come to light.
Meeting Mei and Learning of Tao
Led by a mysterious girl named Mei and a wooden figure called Mokuji, Gabimaru and Sagiri ventured deeper into the island. Through Mei, they learned of the Tensen — immortal rulers of the island — and the concept of Tao (Qi), a fundamental life force present in all living beings.
Convicts Engage Enemies; First Casualties
The convicts encountered Tensen subordinates and the island's monstrous creatures, engaging in separate battles. It became clear that ordinary sword techniques could not kill the Tensen, and several convicts and executioners were killed.
Alliance Formed with Gantetsusai and Fuchi
Swordsman Toma Gantetsusai, famed as the 'Eight-Province Peerless Sword Dragon,' and his handler Fuchi joined forces with Gabimaru's group. The survivors agreed that cooperation gave them better odds than acting alone.
Mastering Tao to Gain Power Against the Tensen
Under Mei's guidance, Gabimaru and several allies began to master Tao, a life force categorized into five elemental attributes — wood, fire, earth, metal, and water — governed by generative and destructive cycles. They learned that destroying a Tensen's Tanden (the source of their Tao) was the only way to kill them.
Full-Scale Battle with the Tensen; Allied Losses
The Tao-capable survivors engaged the Tensen in direct combat. Several Tensen were slain, but human casualties also mounted. The Tensen were revealed to be hermaphroditic immortals who had accumulated immense Tao through over a thousand years of training.
Truth of Shinsenkyō — Xu Fu's Laboratory
It was revealed that Shinsenkyō was established over a thousand years ago by Xu Fu, dispatched by the First Emperor of Qin to research immortality. The entire island was a product of long-running biological experiments, and the Tensen were artificial immortal beings created by Xu Fu.

The True Nature of the Elixir (Tan)
The 'immortality elixir' sought by the shogunate, called Tan, was revealed to be a substance produced using plant-hybridized human bodies as raw material. The elixir's true nature as a product of human sacrifice undermined its value as a trophy to bring back.
Ren's Ambition — Plan to Convert Japan into Elixir
Ren, the leader of the Tensen, was revealed to be planning to use the divine beast Pangu to transform all people in Japan into raw material for the Tan elixir. The survivors now had to stop not just a monster, but an existential threat to the mainland.
The Aza Brothers Enter the Fray
Convict Aza Chōbei, who had initially acted alone, joined the central conflict alongside his younger brother Toma. Chōbei developed his own Tao abilities and became a key combat asset for the surviving coalition.
Nurugai and Shion Form an Unlikely Bond
Nurugai, the last survivor of a mountain people who refused to submit to the shogunate, formed a close partnership with the blind executioner Shion. Despite very different backgrounds, they complemented each other's weaknesses and faced the island's dangers together.
Final Battle Against Ren and the Divine Beast Pangu
Tensen member Zhu Jin fused with the divine beast Pangu in a catastrophic rampage, forcing the surviving coalition into an all-out battle. Gabimaru and his allies channeled their full Tao power to defeat the island's final threat.
Escape from Shinsenkyō
After defeating the Tensen, survivors including Gabimaru, Sagiri, Gantetsusai, Nurugai, the Aza brothers, Shion, and Jikka escaped the island by ship. All surviving members of the expedition departed Shinsenkyō and set course for mainland Japan.
Report to the Shogunate and the Pardon Negotiation
Upon return, the Yamada Asaemon reported to the shogunate that most survivors had perished. Gantetsusai was chosen as the official pardoned returnee — already publicly known, he could not live in hiding anyway. The remaining survivors were declared dead, effectively granting them freedom.
Gabimaru Reunites with His Wife Yui
Having completed his mission, Gabimaru traveled to a nunnery pointed out by Jikka and was reunited with Yui. After the Iwagakure clan's collapse, Yui had taken refuge there. The couple began an ordinary life together.
The Paths of the Remaining Survivors
Chōbei survived as just a Tanden without a body and left for overseas with his brother Toma. Nurugai and Shion continued traveling together toward a new homeland. Sagiri set off on a journey with Yuzuriha, and Jikka became the new head of the Yamada Asaemon clan.
