Approximately seventeen years before the main story begins, top shogi player Koji Haneda and a young woman were found dead under mysterious circumstances in a case believed to involve the Black Organization's second-in-command, Rum. A survivor known as 'Asaka' vanished. This unsolved case would later form the crux of the Rum arc.

Death of Akemi Miyano and Shiho Miyano's (Sherry's) Growing Doubts About the Organization
Akemi Miyano, raised as an operative of the Black Organization, was eliminated on the organization's orders. Her sister Shiho Miyano (codename: Sherry), a scientist working within the organization, grew suspicious and took her own invention, APTX 4869, to shrink herself and escape.

High-school detective Shinichi Kudo witnessed a suspicious transaction by Black Organization members Gin and Vodka at the amusement park Tropical Land. Knocked unconscious from behind, he was force-fed the experimental drug APTX 4869 and shrank to a child's size. On advice from his neighbor Professor Agasa, he adopted the alias Conan Edogawa to conceal his true identity.

Moving In with the Mouri Detective Agency and Starting Life as Conan Edogawa
Shinichi, now living as the child Conan, moved into the home of Kogoro Mouri, Ran's father and a private detective. He judged that proximity to an active detective would yield useful intelligence on the Black Organization. Using gadgets provided by Professor Agasa — including a wristwatch that fires tranquilizer darts — he continued solving cases while searching for the organization.

Conan decoded the melody 'Nanatsu no Ko' hidden in the keypad tones of a message Vermouth sent to 'that person,' deducing the boss's email address (#969#6261). Combined with the anagram CARASUMA derived from Koji Haneda's dying clue 'PUT ON MASCARA,' the boss was confirmed to be powerful industrialist Karasuma Renya.
