After hearing Nishioka's account, Kohei Araki visits Majime in sales and asks him a question about language. His answer reveals an aptitude for lexicography, and Araki recruits him as a successor.

Using Nishioka's plan, the department rallies support and keeps The Great Passage alive. Months later, Majime goes out alone with Kaguya for the first time and begins writing a letter to express his feelings.

Thirteen years later, Midori Kishibe transfers from a fashion magazine. Nishioka recognizes her sensitivity to language, and she begins taking an active role in bringing The Great Passage to completion.

The custom paper is completed, but an omitted word is discovered
After Kishibe joins, final editing proceeds alongside development of custom paper, which is completed about a year later. As publication nears, the team discovers that an important word has been omitted.

The department completes a recheck of all 240,000 entries
After the omission is found, Majime orders all 240,000 entries checked again. While Matsumoto is hospitalized, staff and temporary workers conduct an around-the-clock proofreading camp and complete the review.

The Great Passage is completed after Matsumoto's death
Just before completion, the department learns that Matsumoto has died of esophageal cancer. The Great Passage is published, and at its celebration Majime receives Matsumoto's letter of thanks and renews his commitment to making dictionaries.
